The famous A5 chip which is used in a number of Apple Inc’s products is now being made in Texas. Previously, Apple used to get most of its hardware from the factories based in Asia where the labor is cheap and the cost of production is very low as compared to that in factories of Europe and North America. A5 chip is prominently used in the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S.
A5 chip is the advanced version of A4 chip which was a success in the electronics market. It should be noted that both A5 and A4 chips are made exclusively for Apple’s products and no other company is allowed to use these chips in their products.
The Texas factory in which A5 chips are being made belongs to Samsung. It is a huge manufacturing plant, nearly equal to the size of 3 football stadiums(isn’t that amazing!). Samsung has only 2 production units in the world for the non memory chips. One is based in Korea and the other one is in its Texas based factory.
When asked about this, neither Apple nor Samsung made any comment in this regard. Apple’s spokesperson said that it is a confidential information which cannot be shared in public since it deals with the exclusive technology used in Apple products. On the other side, a spokesperson of Samsung stated that they cannot disclose the details of their clients as it is not in accordance with the company norms and conditions though he confirmed that Samsung has installed a new production line in its Texas factory.
The most surprising thing is that despite the ongoing patent war between Samsung and Apple, Apple Inc. continues to use chips manufactured by Samsung in most of its products. The only thing that we can say is that Apple and Samsung have done a good job so far together and the same is expected from them in the future.
