Twitter acquires security firm Whisper Systems

Twitter has acquired mobile security firm Whisper Systems, for an undisclosed amount. Both companies have confirmed. This will boost the micro-blogging service’s mobile offerings.

Whisper Systems , is a well-known firm, that provides mobile security for android. Twitter was likely attracted to the talent of Whisper Systems as much as its technology because of the fact that that Twitter failed to adequately safeguard user information, which led to two high-profile hacker attacks in early 2009.

Whisper Systems is a small company, consisting only of two employees: security experts Moxie Marlinspike and Stuart Anderson. Marlinspike is the author of several well-known cyber security tools, including SSLstrip and wpacracker.

Its products includes –
WhisperCore 0.5 (Device and data security for Android.),
WhisperMonitor 0.1 (Network security for Android),
Flashback 0.1 (Encrypted backups for Android),
RedPhone 0.4 (Encrypted voice for Android),
TextSecure 0.5 (Encrypted texts for Android).

For an acquistion, not a bad find for Twitter, a company that has yet to switch over to a default HTTPS option for its 100 million active members’ posts. But we will have to look what its further action would be.
