According to some reports by independent agencies, a computer virus has infected US Predator and Reaper drone fleet which are used by the American government to hunt down terrorists and are often deployed in wartime scenario. The virus has logged keystrokes of the pilots remotely flying missions and who control the drones on the warfront.
The virus was detected 2 weeks ago but no action has been taken by the Air Force or other government agencies till date. No missions have been halted in Afghanistan and other warzones which are controlled by Creech Air Force Base in Nevada. The virus was detected by the military’s Host Based security system.
According to some sources, no classified information is believed to be stolen by the virus though it resisted several attempts to remove it. The computer and security experts constantly tried to wipe it off but it kept coming back and according to them, it was benign but they were not able to understand the true nature of the virus.
Experts claimed that this virus might have infected many other machines of other security bases but they are not sure about that. The only thing which they knew at the time is that this virus has certainly infiltrated most of the machines at Creech’s base and thus the threat of classified information being stolen can’t be ruled out. It is yet not clear whether this virus implant was intentional or not.
This is one of the most severe security issues which are faced by the United States government in the recent times. Drones are an integral part in the missions operated by the United States military and other intelligence services like CIA worldwide to track and destroy terrorist bases. And if some sensitive information related to these drones has been stolen, it can be used by terrorist organizations like Al Qaida to counter the Drone attacks and they may even use this informations to build their own Drones and that, according to us, will be one of the nightmares of the security agencies all over the globe.
