Is Microsoft Designing A Custom Version Of Silverlight For Xbox Dashboard Update?

Rumor has it that Microsoft’s Xbox team is working very hard to develop a version of Silverlight for Xbox users which will stream the content directly to the users. Sources have claimed that the code name of this project is Lakeview and it will contain a whole new variety of actions for the Xbox 360 Kinect system and it will feature more gesture and voice controls.

Microsoft has planned to release it in this fall and is currently working to release some revisions prior to the final release so as to provide this version to the third party developers who can test it and provide their feedback to Microsoft. Microsoft has also planned to allow app developers to build video apps for the Xbox 360 independently and that would not include much assistance from Microsoft’s side.

One of the main reasons for this move by Microsoft is that its partners are not using its Smooth Streaming Service for content delivery. Instead, most of them use Apple Inc’s HTTP Live Streaming technology which is far better than Microsoft’s Smooth Streaming Service. Microsoft expects that with the rapid development of Lakeview, it can test various versions of it before finally including it in the dashboard update which is rumored to be around 15th November this fall.

Microsoft has also collaborated with many tech firms who will provide various apps and latest technical assistance to Xbox 360 users. The update to the dashboard of Xbox 360 will include a feature which will enable users to find the content of their choice by just typing a keyword in the Bing search or by using voice commands of Xbox Kinect.

Microsoft is targeting the release around Thanksgiving holidays as it expects more people to buy and enjoy the new dashboard in Thanksgiving holidays. Plus any existing users will also be able to install the update and the new users can purchase the updated version directly from Microsoft and related vendors.

While in the first look, this strategy by Microsoft appears to be good, but yet we won’t bet our money on Xbox 360 update as in coming days a lot of better options will be available in the market.
