HTC, the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer, over the years has produced devices running a handful of operating systems over the years, from big names like Android to lightweight options like Qualcomm’s BREW. What we’ve never seen though is a device that is HTC through and through — HTC hardware meets HTC OS.
Now it seems that HTC is considering purchasing their own mobile operating system for use in forthcoming devices, as company has revealed. HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang told the Economic Observer of China that HTC has given purchasing a mobile OS a thought and have discussed it internally. Wang said, “We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform. Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS.”
HTC currently uses Google’s Android OS on most of their smartphones and a Windows Phone 7 on some of their other handsets. Maybe it seems like that the company may want to take a cue from Samsung and have an in house OS to work with.
